When deciding what style or size of BioHaven to order, there are some variables to take into account. These include:
Do you want a floating wetland (standard) or a Living Walkway (custom)?
BioHaven floating islands are not meant to be walked on (unless you're prepared to get wet feet), whereas Living Walkways are designed with supporting people and structures in mind.
Size of island relative to waterway
Generally, you want something that "looks right", so we recommend 750 sq ft of BioHaven for every surface acre of water. You can start off with a 250 and build up to 750 sq ft in increments. Odd numbers of BioHavens are more aesthetic than even numbers - in other words, three is better than two!
What sort of nutrient load are you dealing with?
If you are concerned about removal of specific pollutants or nutrients, our engineers can work with you towards a holistic solution, estimating the amount of BioHaven surface area, as well as circulation and aeration, you are likely to need to acheive effective stewardship.
If you're not using sod...
...we would like you to let us know. BioHavens' standard buoyancy is designed around the need to support the heavy weight of sod. If you do not use sod, your BioHaven may sit a little higher in the water. This will mean having to add negative buoancy to keep the plant roots watered in the first 2 - 3 weeks.
How much weight will the BioHaven need to bear?
Custom BioHavens can be built to support any weight. However, standard BioHavens are floating wetlands, and are not built to support the weight of a person, unless you specifically ask for this. If you require a maintenance worker to walk on the island, you need to include this in your specifications. If you intend the BioHaven to support any other kind of weight (eg, a picnic table), you need to let us know what and how much.
Terrestrial or Wetland Plants?
In freshwater either can be grown successfully on a BioHaven. However, terrestrials will require consistent and high levels of dissolved oxygen in the water. This is readily achieved by positioning an aerator under your BioHaven.
Do you have a particular planting scheme in mind?
If so, please let us know so we can position the planting holes and pockets exactly where you want them. There may be an extra charge for this service.
Is there algaecide (or any other -cide) in the water?
Algaecides can kill bacteria, which BioHavens rely on for cleansing water and for buoyancy. Only use "safe" products, recommended by professional pond or lake specialists.
Are you dealing with brackish or salt water?
If so, it is essential that you choose plants that are salt-tolerant. Ideally you would conduct water-testing before determining your planting regime, and even commission a local nursery to grow plants using the very water the BioHaven will be launched into. It would be helpful for us to know in advance if you're planning to launch into brackish or salt water.
