Company profile

Floating Island International, LLC, is a privately owned company, founded by a group of partners led by inventor Bruce Kania. FII is a subsidiary of successful invention company, Fountainhead LLC, of which Bruce is the majority owner.

Fountainhead has brought to market many successful inventions in numerous fields of endeavor, yielding annual royalties of approximately $1.2 million. Its IP portfolio is worth approximately $12 million. Its business model is to develop then license its inventions.

BioHaven floating islands have been in development and testing since 2000. In 2005, Fountainhead decided to depart, temporarily, from its usual licensing model and take floating islands directly to market, setting up a production facility at the Shepherd Research Farm in Shepherd, Montana. Floating Island International was thus formed, and opened for business in July of that year. In the first two years, 1600 islands left the facility for the waterways of the world - to the US and Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, UK, Korea and Europe. As of August 2008, 3100 islands have been launched.

Serious research was initiated to prove the efficacy of floating islands in removing common pollutants. Over twenty-nine different applications have been identified for floating islands – in other words, the marketability of the product has been proven beyond any doubt.

Now in 2008 Floating Island International has two major streams of operation: besides operating a small production facility which can produce 4,000 sq ft of islands in 24 hrs, it also spearheads a licensing process – to find business entities throughout the world who will take FII's technology under patent, and develop production facilities in different parts of the world. These licensees are autonomous businesses, protected by FII's extensive patent portfolio. They form a loose affiliation to gain corporate benefits. The first licensee was Freedom Ponds, based in Albuquerque, NM. Subsequent licenses cover New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and six States in the US. Plenty of opportunities still exist for visionary, enterprising companies to be in on the ground floor of this important new industry.

In January 2008, FII was awarded a $1.295 million grant to establish a production facility in California. The grant represents the Department of Conservation's initiative to use more recycled plastic in-state.

FII continues to invest in research, and supports many collaborative demonstration projects to prove BioHavens' efficacy in the field. Supported by a team of world-class engineers and environmental consultants, such projects are specified to the highest standards.
