BioHaven floating islands have been used for many types of habitat restoration projects, for insects, frogs, and all kinds of birds, as well as for otters, turtles and fish. By offering a riparian zone in the center of a water body away from predator pathways, BioHavens offer a safe zone - on the island, within the island itself, within the flora growing on the island, and within the root mass.
Biofilm and periphyton provide a food source for the various food webs which exist around these islands. The biota that have been found within an island include scuds, nymphs and small water snails, all of which make an important contribution to the health of a water body.
Some wild species that have already benefited from BioHaven security are:
Caspian Terns
Sandhill Cranes
Trumpeter Swans
Loons.
We offer a specialized design for loon platforms, which are very popular with loons. Anchored at four points for stability, loons access it via ramped sides. The elevated platform has a central dished area which retains eggs. It comes with four slots for holding dead branches (to deter avian predators), and can be pre-seeded with a customizable mix of native wetland plants. The perimeter can be planted with cuttings from the shoreline. The 45 sq ft island is lightweight and easy to transport by pick-up. It is reinforced inside to protect against damage by muskrats or nutria.
Zoos have installed them for otters, swans and turtles, to the benefit of both the animals and the public.
Some proposed installations include:
shelter for migrating fish in channelized rivers;
sandhill crane breeding while discouraging geese;
leopard frog habitat islands.
Because BioHavens can be constructed in any size, shape or thickness, we can bio-mimic a huge variety of habitats. They can be made to support gravel if vegetation is not appropriate. They can be used as overhanging banks. They can even be submerged, wholly or partially, to create spawning platforms or other features.
We can create freshwater pools within an island or on top of an island for bird baths or easily accessible drinking water. We can build ramps for young birds to get easier access. We can plant brushy or low plants to attract or discourage different kinds of birds. The permutations are endless!
There are also some very clever people out there who know how to attract a desired species to a BioHaven, using decoys and callers, for example. We have staff biologists and etymologists to provide consultancy services relating to BioHaven habitats.
Of course BioHavens deliver all their benefits to wildlife management, including water quality improvement. BioHavens play a key role in contributing to the health of our planet.
