BioHaven® Floating Islands and RAM

are the ideal solution for lake and pond managers who are seeking a nature-based option to enhance the health of their water resource and expand its abundance and productivity. They are a great example of Biomimicry – following nature’s methods for dealing with critical issues.

BioHavens are effective at ecosystem level: by providing habitat for microbes and macro-invertebrates, they bring back the food web and all the benefits of an abundant system: water clarity, a thriving fishery, fewer problems with algae and a renewed love of waterfront living.

RAM is an exciting recent development of BioHaven that offers relief for two of the major issues of our time: Harmful Algae Blooms and release of aquatic methane into the atmosphere.

BioHaven Floating Islands harness natural biological processes to clean water, removing contaminants from the water column by mechanical processes (filtration and sedimentation) and biological processes (nutrient cycling into periphyton via biofilm, phyto-remediation).

A typical BioHaven will be a rectangular module, usually naturalized, that can be stand-alone or joined together in rows. They are constructed from stacked layers of 2-inch-thick matrix. A wetland island can be 4 or 5 layers thick; a platform island can be up to 24 layers thick.

Internal buoyancy can vary from 12 – 60 lbs per square foot, determined before construction. Planting pockets may be formed in the island on 12 or 18-inch centers or omitted. Islands are delivered to site without plants, which are usually sourced locally, and are either tethered or anchored in place. Every island is given a tough coating of ‘armor’ which is highly resistant to UV and other environmental damage before it leaves the factory.

WHAT MAKE BIOHAVENS THE BEST?

1. BioHaven matrix is a highly technical, engineered substrate, made from the highest-grade materials, to form a resilient attachment surface for biofilm – a bioreactor.

2. BioHaven matrix is a perfect plant-growing platform, allowing perennial plants to fully mature and be effective over many years without reaching a performance plateau.

3. Oxygen is allowed to permeate the upper layers to benefit plant growth, while below the waterline, biofilm covers every fiber.

TESTIMONIAL

“I could have taken all that money I spent over the years on chemicals and simply invested in a BioHaven solution which is a much more natural way to transition water. Water stewardship is an important role and I’m proud that I have been able to make a positive difference.”
